Travelling to Orlando

By plane

The Orlando International Airport (IATA Code MCO ), located approximately 10 km southeast of downtown Orlando, is one of the busiest airports in the United States with numerous national and international connections. There are non-stop Lufthansa flights from Frankfurt .

As most travelers continue with a rental car or pick up from a hotel shuttle, public transport is underdeveloped. There is a city bus to various destinations in Downtown Orlando and Disney World, as well as taxis and commercial shuttle services. An overview is available here .

A rail connection is under construction and should go into operation in 2020

Orlando Attractions

Walt Disney World

Orlando’s main attraction is Walt Disney World , the world’s most visited tourist attraction (52.5 million visitors annually). The 10,117-acre resort, located 20 minutes southwest of downtown, includes 4 theme parks, 2 water parks, several theaters, 24 theme hotels, and the Downtown Disney shopping and nightlife complex .

Magic Kingdom , the oldest park in the complex (opened in 1971). The park is designed for families with younger children and is teeming with well-known Disney themes. Among other things, here is the famous Cinderella Castle, a replica of the cartoon from 1950. The park includes 6 areas: Main Street USA , Adventureland (motifs from Disney adventure films), Frontierland (Wild West motifs), Liberty Square (Motive from American history), Fantasyland (themes from classic Disney animated cartoons) and Tomorrowland(Science fiction motifs). The fireworks (“Wishes Firework”) held every evening in the park is considered the best attraction in the entire Disney World complex. Day Ticket $ 95 (Children 3-9 years $ 89).

  • EPCOT , amusement park with science and technology topics. Opened in 1982, the EPCOT Park (short for “Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow”) is twice as big as the Magic Kingdom. Every evening, the park combines the fireworks, laser, water, fire and light show IllumiNations: Reflection of Earth , which is considered one of the best in the city. Day Ticket $ 90 (Children 3-9 years $ 84). ( Wikipedia )

  • Disney’s Animal Kingdom , the fourth park of the complex opened in 1998. With over 200 hectares, it is the largest park. Its theme is the conservation of wildlife and the whole thing is a zoo or wildlife park with all sorts of entertainment spectacle. Day Ticket $ 95 (Children 3-9 years $ 89). ( Wikipedia )
  • Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon Water Park , the older of the two water parks in Disney World. ( Wikipedia )
  • Disney’s Blizzard Beach , the younger of the two water parks. ( Wikipedia )
  • Downtown Disney (1490 E Buena Vista Dr, Lake Buena Vista), shopping, nightlife and entertainment district on the eastern edge of Walt Disney World. The complex includes a theater where ever the Cirque du Soleil -Show La Nouba is listed. According to Tripadvisor, this is the best show in Orlando. Tickets from $ 67.10 (children 3-9 from $ 55.38).

Universal Orlando

Walt Disney World’s immediate rival is Universal Orlando , which owns two theme parks ( Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios ), a Universal CityWalkentertainment complex and three Loews Group luxury hotels. The Universal Parks include rides and elaborate pseudo-movie sets. The Tripadvisor believes the two parks – especially the Islands of Adventure – are even more entertaining than Disney’s; Disney, however, offers the best shows. The Universal Complex is just over 10 minutes southwest of downtown Orlando.

  • Universal’s Islands of Adventure (6000 Universal Blvd), a popular theme park featuring popular movie releases. Day tickets from $ 92 (Children 3-9 from $ 86). ( Wikipedia )
  • Universal Studios , opened in 1990, entertainment park with themes from film and television. Day tickets from $ 92 (Children 3-9 from $ 86). ( Wikipedia )
  • Universal CityWalk (6000 Universal Boulevard): A complex of restaurants, bars, clubs and music stages that only really comes to life in the evening.

Seaworld Parks

The Seaworld complex is located 20 minutes southwest of downtown Orlando on the edge of the I-4 motorway.

  • Discovery Cove (6000 Discovery Cove Way): Small water park of the Seaworld Group. Modeled on a tropical island. Visitors can swim with dolphins under the guidance of a trainer or snorkel with rays and other fish. Day tickets (all inclusive) $ 259-319 (without Dolphin Swim $ 169-219). Previous reservation required. According to Tripadvisor, the most attractive park in Orlando, and even better than Universal Orlando and Disney World. ( Wikipedia )
  • SeaWorld (7007 Sea World Dr): Large amusement park with marine mammals (whales, dolphins, walruses, etc.) and many other marine life, 11 rides and other entertainment programs. Tripadvisor says it’s not worth the trip, but people who really enjoy watching animals may come to a different view. Day tickets $ 82 (children 3-9 $ 77). ( Wikipedia )
  • Aquatica (5800 Water Play Way): Large water park opened in 2008, with water slides, flowing channels, wave pools and other fun facilities. The main attraction is a transparent tube, with which one can slip through a lagoon with dolphins and other aquatic animals. Day tickets $ 46 (children 3-9 $ 41). ( Wikipedia )

Other parks

  • Gatorland (14501 South Orange Blossom Trail): Located in the south of Orlando, this is a special zoo especially for families with children, where you can study, among other things, the difference between a crocodile and an alligator. Admission $ 26.99 (Children 3-12 $ 33.99).
  • Wet ‘n Wild (6200 International Drive), Smaller water park for families with children. One of the lamer addresses in Orlando.
  • Fun Spot (5700 Fun Spot Way): Less than fifteen minutes southwest of downtown is this amusement park with rides. The only plus of this attraction is that access costs nothing. Payment is made per trip.

Streets and squares

  • International Drive : Located in southwest Orlando, this 17-km road is home to some of Orlando’s premier attractions, in addition to countless hotels and restaurants. The Drive begins 13 minutes southwest of downtown Orlando at the Orlando Premium Outlets, cuts twice Universal Boulevard (which you can drive instead because it passes the Universal Park Complex), then touches the SeaWorld Complex, and only lasts Vineland Avenue inconsequential. If you still do not have enough, head over to the other side of I-4, where the Disney World complex begins.

Other Orlando Activities

  • Orlando Shakespeare Theater
  • iFly Orlando (6805 Visitors Circle, near Florida Center). In this facility you can try “indoor skydiving”, ie weightlessness over a large propeller.
  • AirHeads Trampoline Area (33W Pineloch Ave, 6 minutes south of downtown): Trampolining until you drop. Access and viewing costs nothing; If you want to hop, you can buy $ 2.85 special socks and pay $ 16.95 for one day.
